SANDAKAN: The Sabah Region Four Marine Police Force (PPM) and the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) foiled an illegal mangrove bark theft during an operation at the mangrove forest along Sungai Terusan Duyung.
Region Four Marine Police Commander Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said the joint operation took place at around 2.30pm on Oct 31, after authorities detected signs of intrusion and illegal stripping of mangrove bark in the area.
“During the operation with the SFD, the team seized a total of 20 bundles of mangrove bark, believed to have been taken from about 180 trees,” he said in a statement, Thursday.
The total value of the confiscated items is estimated at RM70,000, and the case is being investigated under the Forest Enactment 1968.
Mohd Nazri added that the Marine Police remain committed to combating all forms of smuggling and misappropriation of natural resources, particularly in Sabah’s waters and other strategic areas.
“Region Four Marine Police welcomes cooperation and information from the public to help curb illegal activities,” he said.
He also noted that enforcement operations will be intensified to ensure the nation’s security and wellbeing are preserved.
