Kota Kinabalu: A 72-year-old illegal Filipino, Azizul Jamal, pleaded not guilty in the High Court here on Friday to murdering a man in Beaufort two years ago.
Azizul, a rubber tapper, is accused of killing Joey Naberty, also an undocumented worker in his 20s, on Nov 20, 2024, between 3pm and 4.20pm in the bushes of Kg Balibata, Jalan Binunuk, Beaufort.
The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane for male offenders below 50, upon conviction.
Judge Datuk Celestina Stuel Galid fixed May 7 for case management and ordered the accused to be further remanded, as the offence is non-bailable.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Dana Arabi Wazani prosecuted, while Azizul was represented by counsel Abdul Fikry Jaafar Abdullah.
