SIPITANG: Third-year Electrical and Electronic Engineering students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) gained valuable hands-on experience in high-voltage power systems during an educational visit to the 275/132kV PMU Mengalong Substation here.
The visit was jointly organised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), and UMS, led by lecturer Ahmad Razani Haron.
Representing IEM Sabah Branch were Executive Committee Member Leona Ng and Co-Opted Committee Member Dr Chua Bih Lii, among others.
The students were hosted by SESB’s Chief Engineer of Transmission Operation and Maintenance (Western Region) Felix Ho and his team, who provided detailed technical briefings on the operation of primary and secondary transmission equipment.
The visit aimed to bridge classroom theory with practical application, giving students first-hand insight into how Sabah’s transmission network ensures stable and reliable electricity supply.
Completed in 2019, the PMU Mengalong Substation serves as a main intake point for Sabah’s power grid and plays a key role in the interconnection with Sarawak — enhancing grid reliability and supporting energy security through cross-border power transfer.
IEM Sabah Branch Chairman Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar commended the initiative, emphasising the importance of real-world industry exposure to complement academic learning.
The visit concluded with a group photo session at the site, marking a meaningful experience for the UMS students and organisers alike.
