KOTA KINABALU: A police sergeant was charged in the Special Corruption Court here on Wednesday for allegedly receiving a RM4,000 bribe to secure the release of a detainee.
Sergeant Sazaly Sahaji, 45, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus when the charge was read to him.
He was accused of accepting the money from one Al Sadam Madusin as an inducement to release a detainee known as Disa at a restaurant in Kepayan on July 28 last year.
The offence under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 carries up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
The court set December 12 for pre-trial case management and March 2–3 next year for hearing, while allowing Sazaly bail of RM10,000 with two local sureties and monthly reporting conditions.
