KOTA KINABALU: A company was fined RM18,000 or ten months’ jail in default for carrying out unauthorised Internet cable installation works near a high-voltage power line that caused the death of a worker in Membakut.
Swif Fintech Sdn Bhd, represented by its manager, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim to installing the YES Home Fibre Internet system without a permit from Sabah Electricity (SE).
The company’s sub-contractor’s worker, 20-year-old Mohammad Roy Zaimie Madang, died after being electrocuted while carrying out installation works near SE’s 11kV high-voltage line at Kg Sinoko, Jalan Bambangan, on Jan 14 this year.
Prosecuting officer Andryeno Thomas from the Energy Commission of Sabah urged for a heavier sentence, stressing that safety regulations must be observed to prevent such fatal incidents.
The company, appointed by YTL Communications to manage fibre installation services in Sabah, admitted failing to secure SE’s authorisation before commencing work, leading to the accident.
