PAPAR: The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) has confirmed plans to contest more than two constituencies in the upcoming state election, signalling its intent to expand its electoral reach.
Secretary-General Datuk Senator Nelson W. Angang said the decision followed internal discussions and reflected the party’s confidence to compete beyond earlier expectations.
“Several constituencies have been identified, and it’s more than two. We’re focused and ready,” he said after the Upko Papar Convention officiated by party president Datuk Ewon Benedick at Kg Biau recently.
Nelson said the decision was made independently, adding that Upko’s stance remained firm despite differing views within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition.
He confirmed his intention to contest the Limbahau seat, stressing there was no issue of “encroachment” even though incumbent Datuk Juil Nuatim of GRS has also declared his candidacy.
“There’s no such thing as trespassing. This is democracy. Let the people decide,” he said.
Nelson explained that Upko had initially requested to contest Limbahau when it was created in 2020, but the seat was given to Warisan at the time.
With Warisan now in opposition, he said it was fair for Upko to offer itself again in the area.
Sources said Upko is expected to field candidates in Kadamaian, Limbahau, Moyog, and several Kadazandusun Murut-majority areas.
Meanwhile, Upko Papar chief Datuk Gilbert Sham said the division had passed resolutions to contest in Limbahau and to urge President Ewon Benedick to resign from the Federal Cabinet if Putrajaya appeals the High Court’s ruling on Sabah’s 40pc revenue entitlement.
