Tenom: Just days after a mass fish death incident in Tambunan, a similar environmental concern has emerged in Tenom, where hundreds of dead fish have been discovered in the Purolon River at Kampung Makaniton.
The fish, of various species, were found floating or trapped among rocks, riverbanks, and tree roots — raising alarm among locals.
Some villagers who examined the carcasses reported finding worms in the fish’s stomachs, heightening fears of serious water pollution and potential health risks.
Kampung Makaniton Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Chairman, Jubin Kinsil, said the phenomenon was first noticed four days ago and has since worsened.
He noted that while a few fish remain alive, many appear weak, likely due to poor water quality.
Residents from six nearby villages who depend on the river as their primary gravity-fed water source are now worried about the safety of their daily supply.
Jubin said an official report will be lodged with the Tenom Fisheries Department and Tenom Health Department to prompt immediate action, including collecting water and fish samples for lab analysis.
“Residents hope the cause can be identified soon, whether it’s chemical contamination, agricultural runoff, or other environmental factors,” he said.
He also urged the public to avoid using river water and to stop fishing or consuming fish from the river until further notice.
