Perisai FC crowned football champs

SANDAKAN: The Perisai FC football team successfully won the title of champion in the DPLI UMS 2026 Football Mini League Programme competition organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sandakan Campus which was held here recently.

Perisai FC emerged as the champion after displaying the most consistent performance throughout the tournament which took place at the UMS Sandakan Campus Football Field, while Lundus FC were the runners-up with Elevenz FC came in third place.

In the individual category, Perisai FC player, Mohamad Ahareeza, was crowned as the tournament’s top scorer, while Lundus FC goalkeeper, Mohamad Haikal Haziq, received the Best Goalkeeper award for his excellent performance throughout the competition.

The tournament organised by Diploma in Postgraduate Education (DPLI) students for the 2025/2026 session was held as part of the requirements of the DT50502 Co-Curricular Management and Governance course under the Faculty of Education and Sports Studies, UMS, with the objective of providing practical exposure to students in the aspects of planning, management and implementation of sports tournaments systematically.

Programme Director, Muhammad Nur Hafiz Mohd Ridwan said that the success of organising the mini league proved the high commitment of the implementing committee in ensuring that the programme runs smoothly, is organised and achieves the set learning objectives.

According to him, the programme is not just a football competition field, but rather an experiential learning platform for DPLI students to apply leadership, communication, technical management, protocol, logistics and teamwork skills in real situations.

“I am very proud of the spirit of cooperation of all committees, participants and teams involved until this programme was successfully implemented smoothly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Programme Advisor Lecturer, Dr Frederick Josue @ Mohd Fadhil Abdullah said that organising such programmes is important in shaping the professional skills of future educators, especially in the field of co-curricular and sports management in schools.

He said that the experience of conducting real programmes helps to shape future teachers who are more confident, disciplined and prepared to manage co-curricular activities effectively in the future.

He also emphasised that sports activities such as football can foster positive values including sportsmanship, leadership, effective communication and physical well-being among students.

The DPLI UMS Sandakan 2026 Football Mini League Programme also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda, especially SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Collaboration for the Goals through the active involvement of students in physical activities, practical learning and collaborative programme management.
