He said police received a report from the public at 8.54am, prompting a team to be dispatched to the scene.
“Initial inspection found the body of the victim lying face down near the riverbank before it was sent to Tenom Hospital for further action,” he said.
He said police records showed a report had been lodged on Sunday (May 10) regarding a student who left the hostel of SMK Kemabong at 7am, made by the school’s male hostel warden.
He added that identification of the victim’s clothing confirmed it matched the hostel uniform.
He said preliminary checks by doctors at the scene and hospital found no signs of criminal elements or suspicious injuries on the victim’s body.
“The cause of death has yet to be determined, and a post-mortem will be conducted at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, today,” he said.
Meanwhile, a special investigation team from the Tenom District Criminal Investigation Division has been set up to conduct a thorough probe into the case.
