Kuala Lumpur: Fresh concerns over ground safety in Wangsa Maju surfaced after a sinkhole about the size of a motorcycle opened along Jalan Wangsa Delima 4 near Sunway Wangsa Mall on Monday.
Videos shared on Threads by Arifizyani showed water pouring into the sinkhole, while dashcam footage captured a car narrowly passing over the spot moments before the road collapsed.
“Be careful if you pass this road today. Jalan Wangsa Delima 4. Near the intersection of Wangsa Walk Mall (now named Sunway Wangsa Mall),” Arifizyani said.
Malay Mail reported on Tuesday that initial investigations found the sinkhole was linked to utility maintenance works, with Kuala Lumpur Mayor Fadlun Mak Ujud saying the area’s water retention structure within the drainage system had likely collapsed.
“There is a possibility the work damaged the structure, causing it to crack and allowing drainage water to flow directly into the soil, eventually resulting in the sinkhole,” he said, adding that the affected area would be closed for two weeks for repairs.
The videos have since attracted more than 900,000 views and around 700 comments, with several netizens voicing fears over the safety of residents living among the many high-rise apartments and condominiums in Wangsa Maju.
The incident also revived memories of the August 2024 tragedy involving Vijaya Lakshmi, 48, who fell into an eight-metre sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur, while her family in February 2025 urged the Malaysian government to issue a death certificate and provide “fair compensation”.
