MENUMBOK: A 20-year-old man’s attempt to evade police ended in arrest after a dramatic chase from Beaufort town to Bongawan, as officers also uncovered suspected cable theft equipment during the operation.
The suspect was detained after allegedly speeding away in a Proton Iswara during an operation along Jalan Bongawan, Papar, and is believed to have thrown cables and other objects at pursuing police vehicles in an effort to obstruct enforcement.

Beaufort District Police Chief Supt. Champin Piuh said the suspect and several accomplices fled after the chase intensified, forcing police to pursue them through several areas before the vehicle went off-road.
“The suspect later abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes, but was tracked down and arrested,” he said.
Police also seized a vehicle, six large rolls of cable and other equipment believed to be linked to cable theft activities. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties.
In separate incidents, police also detained several men for drug-related offences in Menumbok and Kuala Penyu, with urine tests confirming the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine in some cases. The suspects are being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Police said the arrests reflect ongoing enforcement efforts to curb drug abuse and related criminal activities in the district, warning that interference with law enforcement will not be tolerated.
