Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin said the party had proposed a fact-finding mission to Sarawak to study its successful regulated modern pig farming model.
He described the move as a strategic push to modernise Sabah’s agricultural landscape and lock in long-term food security.
“The move comes as a direct response to the need to raise productivity, strengthen biosecurity standards and unlock the full economic potential of Sabah’s livestock sector — an industry seen as critical to both rural livelihoods and the state’s broader economic resilience,” he said.
Chin said the proposal was tabled during a high-level courtesy call by the party’s leadership on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, where both sides mapped out key priorities for the sector’s growth.
The delegation included Deputy President Datuk Yong Wui Chung, Vice Presidents David Ong Choon Chung and Chong Thien Ming, and Supreme Council Member Nilson Lo Sheng Kuan.
Beyond livestock, Chin said the meeting served as a platform to exchange ideas on agricultural modernisation, technology adoption, and ways to boost output across the board.
Chin emphasised that agriculture remains one of Sabah’s most vital economic pillars — not only as a source of food but as a major provider of jobs and income for rural communities.
“To move forward, we need stronger infrastructure and greater youth involvement in smart, technology-driven farming,” he said, adding that the sector must evolve with the times to remain competitive and sustainable.
Focusing specifically on pig farming — a key protein source for many — Chin noted that Sarawak had established itself as a leader in modern, well-managed operations that balance high production with strict biosecurity and supply stability.
“Their systems and practices offer valuable lessons that can be adapted to suit Sabah’s needs,” he added.
Chin also highlighted that true progress requires collaboration across government, private enterprise, and civil society.
He praised Jamawi’s clear commitment to advancing the sector and expressed optimism that the ministry’s leadership would deliver meaningful results.
The discussion also paved the way for deeper cooperation, with both sides agreeing that shared efforts will drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for all Sabahans.
