KENINGAU: The Keningau Henry Gurney School (HGS) hosted an inspirational talk themed “From Prison to PhD” to motivate juvenile inmates, raise awareness of the importance of education and instilling a renewed sense of purpose towards positive change.
The programme, held at the school, was officiated by Assistant Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Jordan Jude Ellron.

Jordan, who is also Tulid Assemblyman, said the programme provided juvenile inmates with an opportunity to view their future from a more positive perspective and recognise that every individual has the capacity to change, improve and begin a new chapter in life.
He reminded the inmates that they still had a long future ahead of them and ample opportunities to prove their capabilities.
“Past mistakes should not be a barrier to moving forward. Every day presents a new opportunity to acquire knowledge, build character, strengthen self-worth and become someone who contributes meaningfully to family, society and the nation,” he said.
Jordan is confident that, with continuous guidance, support from various stakeholders and strong personal determination, students at Keningau HGS could rebuild their lives and demonstrate that positive change is achievable for anyone willing to strive for it.
The programme featured Dr Malik Yatam as the keynote speaker. He shared his personal journey of overcoming significant challenges before pursuing higher education and eventually earning a doctorate, illustrating how education can serve as a powerful catalyst for transformation.
In his talk, Malik emphasised that knowledge is the key to changing one’s circumstances and shaping one’s identity.
He also highlighted the importance of discipline, sincerity, resilience and commitment in overcoming life’s challenges.
His story inspired the juvenile inmates and reinforced the value of education while demonstrating that adversity can be transformed into an opportunity for growth and success.
The programme forms part of ongoing rehabilitation initiatives focused on character development, education and motivation for juvenile inmates.
Through exposure to the success story of an individual who transformed his life through education, participants were encouraged to set positive goals and strive to become individuals who contribute meaningfully to their families, communities and the nation.
The event also reflected the commitment of Keningau HGS and the Prisons Department to strengthening rehabilitation efforts through education and human development, in line with the department’s slogan, “Safe, Liveable and Inspiring Hope.”
