Heed Labuan’s plea on duty-free status

LABUAN: Chambers of commerce have given the thumbs-up to the Chairman of Labuan Corporation Advisory Council, Datuk Bashir Alias, for his unprecedented bold move in expressing support for the restoration of Labuan’s duty-free status, which had been unfairly snatched away and plunged the island into economic doldrums.

Thanking Bashir, Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said: “The support from an arm of the local lead agency is timely and meaningful, reflecting unanimous stand of the island’s privilege inherited during colonial rule.”

Wong, who is also a member of the Advisory Council, together with local business leaders, have been for years screaming over the erosion of the duty-free status.

However, they seemed to be speaking to wall, as the Government was focussed on enhancing other attractions to draw tourists back.
