Kota Kinabalu: Dr Mary Gambidau from Telupid has been officially appointed as Chairperson of the State-level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Sabah 2026 (UNK 2026), taking on a significant role in leading the organisation of a cultural event that reflects the identity and heritage of the local community.
Her appointment, announced on Wednesday, underscores continued efforts to strengthen Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan as a premier platform for the preservation, empowerment and appreciation of cultural heritage, while promoting the role of young women as heirs to tradition and future community leaders.

In support of the organising efforts, Datuk Joanna Datuk Kitingan has been appointed as Advisor for UNK 2026, where she will provide strategic guidance and leadership support to ensure the smooth execution of the event.
Dr Mary has also formed a main committee comprising Mandy Nandu as Deputy Chairperson, Audrey Wilson Rantau as Secretary, and Maureen J Kananong as Treasurer, alongside a team of senior committee members with extensive experience and credibility in their respective fields.
Preparations for UNK 2026 began as early as February, with several enhancement initiatives already implemented. These include preliminary evaluations of finalists in line with the mandate from the KDCA Central Committee, aimed at improving professionalism, transparency, and the overall quality of participant selection.
The highlight of the event will take place during Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Week 2026, scheduled from May 26 to 31. The week-long programme will bring together 52 finalists from across Sabah, including participants residing in Peninsular Malaysia.

A range of official programmes, cultural activities, evaluation sessions, and personal development initiatives will be conducted in a comprehensive and integrated manner.
Organisers have also confirmed Hilton Kota Kinabalu as the official hotel for this year’s edition.
UNK 2026 is expected to continue playing a vital role as a prestigious platform for preserving and promoting cultural heritage, empowering women as custodians of tradition, and strengthening Sabah’s cultural identity at both national and international levels.
