TAWAU: Twelve Malaysians who allegedly crossed into Sebatik Island, Indonesia without using official immigration entry points were detained by Indonesian authorities, according to a report by Kompas.com.
Head of the Intelligence and Immigration Enforcement Section (Inteldakim) at the Nunukan Immigration Office, Freddy, said the group entered Indonesia via Sebatik without permission, on Saturday night.
The group, comprising five women and seven men, was believed to be intending to take part in a recreational fun run scheduled for Sunday.
He said 10 were detained at a hotel in Sebatik and two others apprehended while preparing for the event.
He said participants were required to use the official Tawau route and complete immigration procedures in Nunukan before entering Sebatik, Indonesia.
All 12 are currently being held at the Nunukan Immigration detention centre for further investigation.
