TAWAU: A suspected online scam syndicate impersonating China police was uncovered following a recent police raid at a resort here, drawing wide public reaction.

Sabah Drug and Crime Prevention Organisation (PPDDS) Advisor Mohd Zaki Harry Susanto (pic) said the bust was commendable but highlighted the seriousness of scam-related crimes in the district.

He said the detention of about 80 individuals in the integrated operation suggested the activity was not small-scale but organised and systematic.

“This is not an isolated issue and shows Tawau is facing a worrying level of cybercrime that requires comprehensive action,” he said when contacted.

Mohd Zaki also expressed concern over growing perceptions labelling the district as a base for scammers, warning that such views could affect the district’s reputation, investor confidence and tourism sector, while urging authorities to focus on identifying those behind the syndicate and calling on youths to be cautious of job offers linked to such activities.
