KOTA KINABALU: A 31-year-old repeat syabu user was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and five strokes of the cane after being found guilty of repeated drug use.
Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan ruled the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Muhammad Aliff Hamidi tested positive for drugs at the Papar police station on Aug 20, 2024, and has a prior conviction for a similar offence.
The court ordered the sentence to run from the date of arrest, followed by three years’ police supervision upon release.
In sentencing, the judge cited public interest, the seriousness of the offence, and the accused’s lack of remorse, while urging him to seek help to overcome his addiction.
The prosecution pushed for a heavier sentence, noting the case went to full trial with six witnesses and that the accused showed no remorse.
