PM Anwar announced an additional public holiday for the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations so that Malaysians can spend more time with their families.
He said the extra holiday would fall either on this Friday (March 20) or Monday (March 23) depending on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri as declared by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal on Thursday.
“If the first day Aidilfitri falls on Friday, March 20, the additional public holiday will be on Monday, March 23.
“But if the first day Aidilfitri falls on Saturday, March 21, the extra public holiday will be given on Friday, March 20.
“We are announcing this early so that people can plan ahead,” Anwar said, noting that the festive season often involves large-scale travel and logistical challenges.
Anwar said the additional public holiday is also a gesture of appreciation for the dedication shown by Malaysians throughout the year, particularly during the fasting month.
“During Ramadan, many people put in extra time, dedication and effort. So we will reward them with an additional holiday,” he said.
Anwar shared a light moment, recounting a conversation with Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury from the Ministry of Finance Malaysia, who had asked why the announcement was made so early.
Anwar said the early announcement was intended to help Malaysians plan whether they would prefer a long weekend on Friday or Monday.
“For those who prefer a Monday holiday, pray that Hari Raya falls on Saturday,” he quipped. The sighting of the Syawal crescent moon to determine the start of Aidilfitri is scheduled for the evening of March 19.
