Kota Kinabalu: Yayasan Petronas contributed 30 satellite tracking units to the Marine Research Foundation (MRF) to support marine biodiversity conservation in Sabah during Petronas’ Sabah Iftar event on Thursday.
The units were handed over by Yayasan Petronas Chief Executive Officer Nelly Shariah Francis to MRF Principal Programme Officer Liyana Izwin Khalid during the breaking-of-fast gathering.
The handover was witnessed by Sabah State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, Petronas Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management Datuk Bacho Pilong, and Petronas Sabah and Labuan Regional Office General Manager Siti Ayu Abdul Wahab.
The devices will be deployed on 10 green turtles and 20 hawksbill turtles across key sites including Gulisan and Selingan Islands in Turtle Islands Park, Lankayan Island, Sipadan Island, and Pom Pom Island.
The tracking will help map critical seagrass and coral reef habitats, supporting long-term conservation planning and national marine protection efforts.
In conjunction with Aidilfitri, Yayasan Petronas also extended festive contributions through its ‘Memacu Kehidupan’ programme, benefiting 300 households across Sabah.
A total of 120 packs each were distributed in Putatan and Papar, 60 in Tenom, with the remaining food packs to be distributed by the Sabah Social Welfare Department (JPKA) in phases throughout Ramadan.
Also present were Sabah State Attorney General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh, Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah, Deputy State Secretary Datuk Norlijah Danin, Petronas Corporate Strategy Senior Vice President Marina Mohamad Taib, and Petronas Group Procurement Vice President Rashidah Alias.
