District police chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said preliminary investigations revealed the victim sustained injuries to the head and body believed to be consistent with gunshot wounds, and his body was sent to the Kota Belud Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
He said further investigations found the victim had gone hunting early that morning with a 35-year-old male companion, who has since been detained to assist investigations and allegedly admitted involvement during initial questioning.
Police also seized a bakakuk-type shotgun and several related items for forensic and ballistic analysis, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder while the public has been urged not to speculate as investigations continue.
