KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained an unregistered boat operated by a local man suspected of drug abuse during a special operation on Wednesday.

Kudat Maritime Director Hasbullah Omar said the 32-year-old suspect was detained about 0.3 nautical miles southwest of the Kudat Ferry Terminal Jetty.

He said the operation, based on intelligence, detected a fibre boat without registration numbers carrying the suspect in suspicious circumstances.

A further inspection uncovered two small packets containing white crystalline substances believed to be drugs.

He said the case, with an estimated value of RM1,500, is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Sabah Ports and Harbours Enactment, with the boat and suspect handed over for further action.
