SANDAKAN: A peninsula-based ready-to-eat (RTE) food specialist, Duwan Food, is set to undertake research and development (R&D) initiatives for the locally produced red durian sambal, also known as sambal soqot, owned by Sandakan entrepreneur Datuk Md Afendi Hamdan.
The collaboration aims to enhance the product’s quality while preserving its original taste, using modern food technology to ensure it remains ready-to-eat and suitable for wider distribution.
The red durian sambal was launched on Jan 14 by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, who highlighted its strong potential to penetrate markets beyond Sandakan, citing the unique flavour of Sabah’s red durian.
Through the R&D process, the sambal will undergo testing, including quality and food safety assessments by a public university in Peninsular Malaysia. The initiative is expected to improve product stability without altering its authentic taste.
