PENANG: A roadside sign meant to help motorists find their way ended up finding unexpected fame online for all the wrong reasons.

A controversial orange traffic sign near Seri Tanjung Pinang was temporarily dismantled after the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) intervened, Mayor Datuk A Rajendran confirmed, theSun reported.

Photographs of the minimalist roundabout diagram, whose design bore an unfortunate resemblance to male anatomy, quickly went viral online.

The directional text pointing towards Tanjung Bungah, Bagan Jermal, Jalan Kelawai and George Town only added to the unintended visual effect.

Images shared on a Facebook page drew more than 150 reactions and dozens of comments, with many expressing regret at missing the sign before it was taken down.

Some initially questioned whether the sign was genuine, while a few defended its technical accuracy without acknowledging its visual implications.

Rajendran said the signage was installed by the developer, Tanjung Pinang Development Sdn Bhd (TPD), a subsidiary of Eastern & Oriental Bhd (E&O), and that the council had instructed it to be modified and removed.

Although dismantled, the sign continues to circulate online through shares and memes, securing an unlikely place in Penang’s Internet folklore.
