Acting district police chief Supt Champin Piuh said the investigation into the officer involved in the discharge is being conducted under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960.
“The injured officer, a 38-year-old corporal, has completed surgery at Tawau Hospital on Sunday,” he told
Daily Express when asked for updates on the case.
Police identified the injured officer as Corporal Mohamad Halim Annuar Mohd Reduwan, 38, who is attached to the Tawau Police Station.
Champin said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun, accompanied by him, visited the corporal at the hospital.
The visit was also attended by Sabah Contingent Internal Security and Public Order Department chief SAC Datuk Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek.
“During the visit, the Police Commissioner obtained updates on the officer’s health and conveyed words of encouragement and moral support to ensure he remains strong throughout his treatment.
“The visit reflects the commitment of the Sabah Contingent’s top leadership in safeguarding the welfare of its personnel and boosting morale, particularly in Tawau.
“At the same time, the corporal is receiving follow-up treatment at the Orthopaedic Ward, and the detainee, a foreign man in his 30s, is also undergoing treatment,” he said.
Champin said investigations into the detainee are being conducted not only over his alleged aggressive conduct and attempt to escape, but also in connection with other offences.
He is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) for unlawful possession of another person’s identity card, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for being in the country without valid documents, as well as Section 12(2) and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of syabu and drug abuse.
