48 years and rotan for RM1.2 million criminal breach of trust
Chia was jailed six years plus one stroke of the cane for each charge, but the court ordered him to serve the jail sentence concurrently from the date of his arrest.
SANDAKAN: A company accounts assistant was sentenced to a total of 48 years’ jail and ordered to get eight strokes of the cane for eight counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM1.2 million.

Sessions Court Judge Roslinda Razali handed down the sentence to Chia Ka Rong, 25, after he pleaded guilty to all the charges against him on Tuesday.

Chia was jailed six years plus one stroke of the cane for each charge, but the court ordered him to serve the jail sentence concurrently from the date of his arrest.

On the first to eight counts, Chia admitted to transferring company funds into his personal bank account without authorisation on several occasions between June and October 2025.

The transactions involved RM50,000 on June 11, RM40,000 on June 23, RM30,000 on July 3, RM200,000 on July 9, RM60,000 on July 24, RM610,000 on July 29, RM160,000 on Sept 17 and RM65,000 on Oct 16.

Investigations revealed that Chia also prepared false invoices and deposited money into the company’s account under his name before transferring it into his personal account.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yuvan Bharathan urged the court to impose a heavy sentence, stressing that the offence was serious and involved a large sum of money. 

He said Chia had abused his position of trust and committed the offence repeatedly, causing the company to suffer losses amounting to RM1.2 million.

Chia, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency saying he is the only child and needed to support his parents. 

He was arrested by officers from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Sandakan District Police Headquarters on Feb 3, this year at 11.25am at a company premises registered under his name at Batu 2½, following a police report lodged by his employer.
