Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity (SE) and the Water Department carried out a large-scale operation to disconnect illegal wiring and water connections in Kampung Delima and Kampung Suang Parai in Karambunai following viral concerns over fire hazards and water supply disruptions.

The illegal water connections have been blamed for poor water supply affecting surrounding areas, including Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Numerous operations previously failed to permanently solve the problem, with the illegal connections typically reappearing once enforcement teams leave.

The latest operation was highlighted by TikTok video by user @rizallatif94 showing SE personnel pointing out dangerous illegal wiring connections in the area, warning they posed serious fire risks.

In the video, the personnel, identifiable by his SE vest, pointed to tangled wiring while pointing out the cause of fires, saying the connections were overloaded and cannot support the load and will burn.

He also pointed to a water pump while identifying it as the cause of water problems.

The joint operation involved the Water Department inspecting illegally tapped water pipes in addition to SE’s dismantling of illegal wiring connections.

The TikTok user thanked SE and the Water Department for their cooperation and swift action, as well as residents who lodged complaints.

The post also acknowledged Karambunai Assemblyman Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan, whose earlier viral video on electricity theft issues reportedly prompted the enforcement action, for being a voice for affected Kampung Delima residents.
