TAWAU: Two local teenage boys, both aged 14, were arrested at separate locations here on Wednesday for suspected involvement in scooter theft and the use of false vehicle registration numbers.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the underage suspects were apprehended after their whereabouts were tracked by a ‘strike team’ from Tawau Police Station.
“The first suspect was arrested by the roadside near a row of shops in Ambar Park at around 5.45pm after he was seen attempting to start a scooter under suspicious circumstances,” he said on Thursday.
Checks revealed that the Yamaha Ego scooter ridden by the suspect bore a questionable registration number.
Further examination of the vehicle’s chassis confirmed that the scooter had been reported stolen by its original owner.
The second suspect, believed to be involved in the same case, was arrested later at the Taman Semarak People’s Housing Programme (PPR) area at around 7.30pm.
He said investigations are being conducted under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a prison term of one to seven years and may include a fine if convicted.
Jasmin urged parents to monitor their children’s movements as police continue to intensify property crime prevention operations, including among teenagers.
