SANDAKAN: The Sessions Court here on Friday sentenced a 42-year-old man to eight years in jail and four strokes of the cane for taking dangerous drugs.
Edi Pani pleaded guilty before Judge Rosalinda Razali to taking amphetamine and methamphetamine on Oct 14, 2025 at about 1.15pm after he tested positive in a urine check at Sandakan Police Station.

A hospital pathology report confirmed that Edi’s urine contained the drugs, the court heard from the prosecution.
Edi was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and had a previous conviction for drug offences in 2022.
The charge carries an imprisonment of between seven and 13 years’ jail, three to six strokes of the cane, on conviction, and must be under police supervision for two years after serving their sentence.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Yuvan Bharathan prosecuted while Edi was not represented.
Meanwhile, four other drug addicts were sentenced for similar offences on Thursday.
Chin Kim Chi @ Chun, 53, was jailed eight years six months from Oct 1, 2025; Chu King Fatt, 60, six years from Sept 23 2025; Agai Ali, 40, six years six months from Nov 6, 2025 and two strokes of the cane; and Alexander Robert Samue, 45, five years from Nov 1, 2025 and one stroke of the cane.
All four, who were unrepresented was ordered to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving their jail terms.
