KINABATANGAN: Barisan Nasional retained both the Lamag and Kinabatangan seats in the joint by-elections Saturday.
Returning officer Dr Eddy Syaizul Rizam Abdullah announced that BN’s Kinabatangan parliamentary seat candidate Mohd Naim Kurniawan Moktar secured 19,852 votes against Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdu Rahman 5,638 to win the three-cornered contest for the seat with a majority of 14,214 votes.
Independent candidate Goldam Hamid only managed to secure 946 votes while there were 369 rejected ballot papers.
For the Lamag State constituency, Dr Eddy announced that Barisan’s Mohd Ismail Ayob @ Miha garnered 7,269 votes against his sole opponent, Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek, who managed to get 1,588 votes.
Miha won the seat with a 5,681 vote majority while there were 160 rejected ballot papers.
The by-elections were held following the death of the incumbent MP and assemblyman, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year.
Bung only narrowly won the Lamag seat against Miha by just 153 votes in the State election last November.
