Kota Kinabalu: Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has announced immediate steps to evaluate and repair the infrastructure of the Likas Sports Complex.
He highlighted the importance of ensuring that all sports facilities remain in good condition and meet acceptable quality standards, as they are intended not only for national and state athletes but also for public use.

“Detailed and comprehensive reports will be prepared by the Sabah Sports Board on the condition of the facilities, including findings from inspections as well as recommendations for necessary repairs, upgrades or improvements,” he said during his working visit to the sports complex on Thursday.
The working visit also covers the Penampang Sports Complex and the Kepayan Youth Arena. While at Likas Sports Complex, he visited the outdoor swimming pools, the gymnasium and multipurpose hall.
He said the main purpose of this visit is to personally inspect the condition of government-owned assets, buildings and sports facilities.
“Through this visit, we are able to identify any weaknesses, shortcomings or maintenance issues firsthand so that appropriate corrective actions could be taken promptly,” he added.
When asked about the video circulating online about the leaking roof at the gymnasium, Nizam clarified that repair works were already in progress.
“Those who recorded and shared the video were reportedly unaware that repair work was ongoing at the time.
“They did not consult with the management before recording and sharing the footage, which led to misunderstandings,” he said.
He added that the roof repair works are expected to be completed within two or three months. Once the main roof repairs are finalised, additional repair works related to the leakage issues will be carried out.
“The Sports Board has also engaged with the Sabah Gymnastics Association, and mutual agreement has been reached in order to resolve the matter as soon as possible,” he said.
Nizam also stressed that the issue is under close monitoring and management, and corrective measures are already being implemented.
“We remain committed to ensuring that all identified issues are addressed. If extra financial resources are needed to maintain or improve the facilities, these will be formally proposed for proper consideration by the government,” he said.
He urged all parties involved in the repair works to perform their duties to the highest standard and to complete the projects according to the agreed schedule without delays, and expressed confidence that all known issues will be resolved within the current year.
