TAWAU: A fire destroyed 30 homes at Lorong Jade 4, Kampung Sri Aman Batu 3, Jalan Apas at about 11.20pm on Saturday, marking the largest number of houses lost in a single fire incident in Tawau this year.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Deputy Superintendent Jemishin Ujin said firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading further, saving about 300 nearby homes.
The emergency call was received at 11.23pm, with 17 firefighters arriving at the scene within 10 minutes.
They were later reinforced by six personnel from Kunak Fire Station and six community firefighters from Kampung Titingan.
All the affected houses were wooden structures in a water settlement area measuring about 262 by 229 square feet.
No casualties were reported. Firefighters had to draw water from open sources, including seawater, to contain the fire.
