TAWAU: A car wash worker suspected of molesting a female student in an incident at the Sri Apas Balung People’s Housing Project (PPR) last month was arrested at Batu 3 Jalan Apas, here.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the foreigner suspect, in his 20s, was detained around 11 pm by a police team from the District Criminal Investigation Department (BSJD).

“This case involves a local woman, aged 21, who claims she was hugged and groped by a man she knew, who also threatened to carry out further violent acts if she did not comply with his demands.

“The frightened victim managed to escape and later filed a police report out of concern for her safety,” he said.

The relationship between the female student and the suspect had begun through the social media platform, TikTok.

“The suspect is currently in police custody and is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, related to criminal assault or sexual harassment, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid identification documents,” he added.

He further stated that the police take crimes that pose a threat to women’s safety very seriously and will take firm action against those involved in such criminal activities.

Jasmin also reminded the public to be cautious, especially when making acquaintances or dealing with unfamiliar individuals through social media platforms.

“We encourage the public to promptly report to the police if they face any security threats or observe suspicious activities in their areas so that immediate action can be taken,” he said.
