Tawau crash: Driver trapped, killed
Firefighters, assisted by members of the public, carry the victim’s body after successfully extricating him from the crashed lorry.
TAWAU: A 58-year-old lorry driver died after being trapped inside his vehicle following an accident at Batu 8, Jalan Apas, at around 12.30pm on Friday.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Deputy Fire Superintendent Jemishin Ujin said they received an emergency call from a member of the public at 12.37pm via the 999 hotline.

“A team of seven firefighters from BBP Tawau, led by Senior Fire Officer I Jehrey Ibno, rushed to the scene, located 23km from the station, and arrived at 12.58pm,” he said.

Upon arrival, the team found that a heavy-duty lorry carrying a 10-tonne load had skidded off the road. Further checks revealed the driver trapped inside, but rescuers managed to extricate him.

“However, the victim was later confirmed dead after a medical officer from the Ministry of Health (MOH) examined him at the scene,” Jemishin said.

The remains were handed over to the police by the Fire Department and MOH personnel for further action.
