Kota Kinabalu: A 46-year-old man was jailed for a total of 30 months by the Magistrate’s Court here on two counts of disposing of stolen items.
Jamil Md Andang pleaded guilty to both charges before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali, who sentenced him to 15 months’ imprisonment for each charge, with the terms to run from Wednesday.
On the first count, Jamil admitted to dishonestly disposing of several stolen jewellery, belonging to one Ting Sbwu Bing at a gold shop in Tuaran on Nov 21, 2024, at 4.30pm.
Jamil, on the second count, pleaded guilty to jointly disposing of a stolen grey safe and various personal documents belonging to one Leong Siaw Vun by the roadside in Kg Bundu Paka, Kota Belud, on Nov 23, 2024, at 3.30pm. The charge stated that he committed the offence along with three accomplices still at large.
The court heard that in the first case, the complainant lodged a police report that her residence was broken into in a residential area in Penampang, where the homeowner discovered valuables worth about RM80,000 missing after unknown individuals entered the house on Oct 22, the same year.
Police investigations later led to Jamil’s arrest at the Tanjung Aru Beach Night Market on Nov 20. He was found to have assisted in selling several pieces of the stolen jewellery through an accomplice.
In the second case, the court was told that a family’s two-storey home at another residential area in Penampang was broken into while they were overseas.
Upon returning to Sabah on Nov 2, the owner found the house ransacked and valuables missing, including three Casio watches, a Rolex, a grey Chubb safe, RM403,000 cash, RM50,000 worth of jewellery, a PS5 set, house keys and a Samsung phone.
The total loss was estimated at RM560,000. Following the intelligence gathered, police again arrested Jamil on Nov 21 at the Tanjung Aru Beach Night Market.
Two days later, on Nov 23, he led investigators to a roadside area in Kg Bundu Paka, Jalan Ranau Bypass, Kota Belud, where a grey safe and several personal documents belonging to the victim were recovered. Deputy Public Prosecutor Akaash Singh prosecuted.
