SANDAKAN: A maritime vessel from the United States, which arrived at Port Klang from Baltimore last September, will be deployed in Sabah’s waters.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the vessel is currently undergoing renovation and maintenance work.
“This vessel will be stationed in Sabah waters once the maintenance process is completed,” he told a media conference after attending the Santai Madani programme with residents in Karamunting, here.
“We will discuss with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency regarding the specific placement of the Coast Guard here,” he said.
“This shows safeguarding the waters of Sabah and Sarawak is a national priority, with strategic assets being positioned, noting that KM Fatimah was deployed in Sarawak.
“Beyond enhancing security levels in Sabah waters, this will also boost the capacity of existing assets in Sabah,” he said.
On another development, Saifuddin said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim selected Karamunting incumbent Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin as the candidate for the Karamunting constituency in the Nov 29 state election.
Meanwhile, George said feedback from the fourth day of campaigning showed residents welcomed his candidacy as a familiar leader in the area.
The Karamunting constituency has 19,000 voters, with 6,000 from the Chinese community.
He pledged to transform Kampung Pukat into a seafood hub capable of exporting marine produce overseas.
The village is renowned for its seafood and fishing community.
Water supply issues and other concerns raised by residents will also be addressed if he is given another mandate after holding the seat for seven years, including during his time in opposition.
