KOTA KINABALU: More than 100 union leaders in Sabah have expressed support for ongoing labour reforms aimed at improving workers’ welfare, according to Human Resource Minister Steven Sim on Tuesday.
Sim, also DAP deputy secretary-general, said the group, representing over 20 unions, was briefed on the implementation of long-awaited amendments to Sabah’s labour laws that now place local workers on equal footing with those in other states.
He said the Federal Government’s recent move to formally recognise gig workers marks an important step in extending clearer rights and protection to the 100,000 gig workers in Sabah.
Sim added that Putrajaya is working to ensure all workers receive 24-hour social protection to better safeguard them from risks outside working hours.
He also introduced Pakatan Harapan’s Tanjung Aru candidate Datuk Chan Foong Hin and Kapayan candidate Jannie Lasimbang as leaders capable of carrying Sabah workers’ concerns to the national level.
