Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Api-Api candidate Loi Kok Liang said City Hall (DBKK) should inspect all public amenities under its care.
This follows Saturday night’s incident where a street lamp on the Segama pedestrian bridge, at the popular “Durians lane” collapsed onto a durian stall.
“Luckily, no one was hurt — but public safety should never depend on luck,” Loi said.
Loi said the Segama pedestrian bridge has suffered from long-term neglect.
“This is not an isolated case. It reflects a bigger problem of poor maintenance,” he pointed out.
He said Kota Kinabalu is a major tourist destination and structural failures not only endanger lives but damage the city’s image and disrupt local livelihoods.
“DBKK must not take public safety for granted. We need immediate, city-wide inspections of all pedestrian bridges, lamp posts, walkways and other public facilities — and transparent follow-up action. Prevention is always better than repair after an accident,” he underscored.
