KOTA KINABALU: Human Resource Minister Steven Sim said about 1,000 gig workers in Kota Kinabalu shared their hopes for better protection during a brief gathering in Tanjung Aru on Tuesday.
He said the meeting, held with Pakatan Harapan’s Tanjung Aru candidate Datuk Chan Foong Hin, reflected the daily realities faced by Sabah’s young gig workforce.
Sim, who is also DAP deputy secretary-general, said a newly passed law in Parliament will formally recognise gig workers as employees under the law, granting them automatic access to basic protections such as social security and clearer complaint channels.
He said Sabah alone has an estimated 100,000 gig workers who have long operated without adequate safeguards, adding that those present welcomed the legal changes as long overdue support for their contribution to the economy.
Sim said the unity between federal and state leaders, including Chan’s ongoing advocacy for Sabah gig workers, is vital to ensure the new framework is implemented effectively for the benefit of the people.
