Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has recorded a drop in the overall crime rate as of the end of October this year, reflecting improved performance across key police departments, said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun.
He said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) recorded strong improvements in case resolutions and prosecutions.
The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, he added, achieved major drug seizures in unexpected areas such as Telupid and Ranau.
“Some arrests were made in locations where the suspects were only passing through, not residing.
“This shows that our intelligence and monitoring network has become more effective,” he told a press conference after the Sabah Police Commissioner’s Monthly
Assembly for November at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), here, Wednesday.
Jauteh said the results reflected the dedication and vigilance of police personnel in maintaining law and order across the State.
He also addressed road safety concerns, noting that driver negligence remained the leading cause of road accidents in Sabah, contributing to nearly 90 per cent of all recorded cases.
“Studies by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department show that 90 per cent of accidents in Sabah are caused by driver carelessness.
“We must intensify enforcement and prosecution as reminders to all road users. Drivers must ensure they are physically, mentally and emotionally fit before getting behind the wheel,” he said, adding that police would continue to strengthen campaigns and enforcement, particularly against driving under the influence of alcohol and operating unsafe vehicles.
According to Jauteh, negligence is not a minor issue.
“It can lead to prosecution in court. The goal is not to punish but to prevent the loss of more lives.”
Earlier, Jauteh emphasised the importance of integrity, discipline and teamwork in maintaining public safety and trust in the police force.
“Our duty is not only to ensure safety but also to uphold the image and trust of the public towards PDRM. Every officer must carry out responsibilities with sincerity and accountability.
“I urge all IPK Sabah personnel to uphold professionalism and readiness, particularly with the approaching election.
“We must always be ready to face any challenge and ensure that Sabah remains safe and orderly. Let us continue to serve together as one strong team under the Sang Saka Biru,” he said.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to outstanding PDRM personnel, followed by a group photo session and the press conference.
Also present were Head of Special Branch, Sabah Contingent, SAC Datuk Abd Rahman Ishak; Head of Internal Security and Public Order Department, Sabah Contingent, SAC Datuk Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek; senior and junior officers; IPK Sabah staff; and media representatives.
