Unity key to strengthening Sabah’s political voice: PBS

KIULU: Sabah’s political strength depends on the ability of its leaders to work together toward a shared vision rather than pursuing their own party agendas, said Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Information Chief, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

He said the people of Sabah deserve stronger local representatives, and the emergence of local political parties reflects the growing concern among Sabahans about the state’s future.

Joniston cautioned, however, that having too many parties competing separately could create division and weaken Sabah’s overall bargaining power in negotiations with the Federal Government.

“When leaders are united, it becomes easier to represent Sabah’s interests clearly, and this is why GRS aspires to be the leading political force in the state,” he said during a Meet-the-People session at Kampung Rangalau Lama here on Sunday.

With the increasing number of political parties in Sabah, Joniston said GRS remains the best choice because of its inclusive approach, which brings together leaders from diverse backgrounds to cooperate for the state’s progress.

“Under the leadership of GRS Chairman and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, we have always made it a point to listen to and accept diverse views within our coalition.

When we work together, we can ensure that Sabah’s interests are properly represented in discussions with the Federal Government,” said Joniston, who is also the incumbent Kiulu Assemblyman.

He said GRS had consistently maintained good relations with Putrajaya, emphasising that cooperation is essential for any state to achieve its development goals, regardless of which party is in power.

Joniston stressed that working with the Federal Government does not mean surrendering Sabah’s rights, but rather ensuring that the state’s voice remains strong and that development opportunities reach the people.

He also noted that frequent changes in government could disrupt progress, especially in rural areas where long-term development plans are still being implemented.

“Continuity is what Sabah needs right now to ensure that projects and community programs are completed and bring real benefits to the people,” he added.
