TAMPARULI: A fun outing turned tragic when a teenage boy drowned while swimming with friends in Sungai Kampung Kimonsi, here.
The 16-year-old victim was reported missing Friday evening, prompting a search and rescue (SAR) operation after the Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 6.05pm.
Tuaran Fire and Rescue Station Chief Mohamad Nor Amit said the victim’s body was recovered by the Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) at 9.15am, Saturday.
“The victim, identified as Randell Junior Rony, was found at the riverbed about 10 metres from where he was last seen,” he said.
“He was confirmed dead at the scene before his remains were handed over to the police for further action.”
A total of 11 personnel, including officers, were involved in the SAR operation, supported by one fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) utility vehicle.
The operation also involved the Civil Defence Force (APM), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and nearby villagers.
“The operation was called off completely at 10.30am,” said Mohamad Nor.
