Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old man was fined RM3,800 or jailed eight months by the Magistrate’s Court, here, for assisting in the disposal of stolen jewellery.
Mohammed Rafzajani Abdul Salam pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to disposing of two stolen gold rings belonging to one Muhaimin Mohd Sulaiman at 9.09am on June 7, this year at a premises in Sinsuran Complex.
The charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, on conviction.
The court heard from Inspector Yusdi Basri that the complainant found out that the jewellery was missing from his car parked at a paid parking area beside the State Mosque in Wisma Muis after performing the Aidiladha prayers.
Upon returning to his vehicle after the prayers, the complainant discovered that the front passenger window had been smashed and several personal belongings, including jewellery, were missing.
Police arrested Rafzajani at Sadong Jaya area on June 8 and also found him in possession of a pawn receipt linked to the complainant’s missing gold items.
In another case, a 27-year-old woman was fined a total of RM200 on two counts of failing to explain a cash deposit of RM5,380 in her bank account, two years ago.
Lee Li Pui Latif pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to failing to provide a reasonable explanation as to how she obtained the money, which had been deposited into her bank account.
The charges stated that Lee was found to have RM3,520 and RM1,860 belonging to one Gillian Lo in her Maybank account, on Jan 10, 2023, at 5.10pm and at 5.35pm, respectively.
Lee was fined RM100 or eight weeks in jail for each of the charges.
The offence under Section 22A(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance provides for a fine of RM100 or up to three months’ jail or both, on conviction.
