29 years of promoting dance
The symbolic handover of leadership during the Sabah Dancesport Association’s (SBDA) 29th anniversary celebration.
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Dancesport Association (SBDA) celebrated a remarkable milestone on Oct 19, marking its 29th anniversary with a heartfelt gathering that reflected nearly three decades of dedication to promoting dance as a positive and enriching activity, particularly among youth.

The celebration also witnessed a symbolic leadership transition, with newly elected President Harold Chung officially taking over the reins from outgoing President John Chong.

In his speech, Chung described the occasion as both momentous and meaningful, highlighting the association’s long-standing commitment to nurturing future generations with a passion for dance — whether pursued as a professional career or an enjoyable hobby.

He commended organising chairman Adrian Chin and his committee for their teamwork and dedication, which contributed to the event’s success.

Kota Kinabalu: KOTA KINABALU: Fiesta Mega Raya (FMR) 2026 is set to be the largest and most prestigious Hari Raya celebration in Sabah, taking place from March 7 to 18, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.
“For 29 years, SBDA has been a platform for youth to discover the joy and discipline of dancesport. This celebration is not just about looking back, but also about moving forward with renewed energy and vision,” Chung said.

He also reflected on the many challenges the association had faced over the years, attributing its resilience to the unity and commitment of its members. Their collective efforts, he noted, had strengthened SBDA’s visibility and made its programmes more practical and accessible to the community.

Chung emphasised that the friendships built through a shared passion for dance have been a powerful source of motivation, keeping the association strong despite obstacles.

He later introduced the new committee members, beginning with former president John Chong, followed by the rest of the leadership team who will help steer SBDA forward.

Also present at the celebration was Cheryl Ellron, representing State Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, who was unable to attend.

Joining the event as well was Chester Lim, President of the Sarawak Dancesport Association (SDA), who came to show support and foster stronger ties between the dance communities of Sabah and Sarawak.

Registered under the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and overseen by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, SBDA has also been officially recognised by the Sabah Tourism Board for its outstanding efforts in nurturing local talent and elevating Sabah’s reputation on the international stage.

Over the years, SBDA has played a vital role in cultivating a vibrant dance community in Sabah, offering training, competitions, and outreach programmes that have inspired countless individuals to embrace dance as a way of life.

As the association looks ahead to its 30th anniversary, its members remain committed to expanding their reach and making a greater impact, ensuring that the joy of dance continues to inspire people of all ages.
