LABUAN: Police seized 46 motorcycles and issued 192 summonses during a traffic enforcement operation near the Ro-Ro Ferry Terminal, Jalan Merdeka over the weekend (Oct 12).
Labuan Police Chief Supt Mohd Hamizi Halim said the seizures were made under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“A total of 80 motorcycles were checked during the operation, with 46 seized for various offences,” he told reporters at the Labuan police station Wednesday.
Common offences included modified exhaust systems, missing side mirrors, unlicensed riding, unregistered motorcycles, illegal accessories, lack of insurance, faulty brakes and expired road tax.
Other violations involved blurred or fancy registration plates, expired licenses, missing ‘L’ stickers, worn-out tyres, unauthorised riders, pillion riders with learner’s permits, and improper helmets.
“These riders were mostly returning from a bike festival held in mainland Sabah,” he said.
The police will request the Department of Environment (DoE) to inspect the seized motorcycles, especially to measure noise levels from modified exhausts, one of the most frequent offences found.
Since January, police have conducted 259 operations targeting street racers and thugs, resulting in 75 motorcycles seized, excluding those confiscated during this recent operation.
Supt Mohd Hamizi also warned that supporters or spectators at illegal racing events can face charges under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for abetting dangerous driving or racing.
Enforcement efforts will continue to maintain road safety and public order in Labuan.
He reminded organisers of the upcoming Labuan International Bike Week at the end of this month to strictly follow event guidelines and traffic laws to ensure safety and compliance.
