Kota Kinabalu: A Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) delegation visited the new capital of Indonesia, Nusantara, and Balikpapan for exchanges as well as inspecting and understanding the progress of the capital’s relocation project.

The SCCC delegation comprised its President Datuk Frankie Liew, Deputy President Brett Chua, Public Relations Director Jacky Ho and life members KK Lo, Kapitan Foo, Robin Ng and NK Wong.

The group set off for Indonesia last week to carry out a series of investigation activities, officially arriving in Tonga, Balikpapan Province and Nusantara on Friday.

They were received by Secretary-General of the Department of Economic Development and People’s Welfare of the City Government, Agus Prasetyo, on behalf of the mayor and other officials.

Also present were Minister of Commerce of the Balikpapan City Government, Arzaedi Rachman, and Expert of Mayor Economy and Development of the Balikpapan City Government, Doortje Marpaung, who briefed SCCC the economic and trade situation of the city.

It is reported that Balikpapan is currently actively attracting investors to develop businesses.

In addition to domestic enterprises, there are also foreign capital and foreign and local joint ventures. In addition to palm oil-related businesses, it also includes mineral-related industries.

Doortje Marpaung revealed that foreign investors are welcome as long as they meet the conditions of the authorities such as joint ventures with local businesses and a 70 per cent local workforce will enable them to obtain tax incentives, among others, provided by the City Hall.

The two sides also exchanged information and hoped to promote economic and tourism cooperation and interactions so as to prepare for the relocation of Indonesia’s capital to Nusantara. Frankie believes that the relocation of Indonesia’s capital will bring a great opportunity to Borneo, allowing the world’s third largest island, which was originally only known for its natural resources, to become a regional administrative, transportation and economic hub, driving economic development and trade in the Eastern Asean Economic Growth Zone.

The group also visited the Monument Park at Zero Point, the new capital of Nusantara, Tonga Province.

The monument park was previously officiated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his wife Iriana along with the presence of 34 local chiefs from across the country. It symbolised a new milestone of Indonesia’s relocation of the capital towards the construction of a new civilization.

Nusantara means islands in Indonesian and the name was personally instructed and finally confirmed by President Joko Widodo. The name Nusantara was chosen because it is globally well-known.

The name represents the united concept of a republic that incorporates Indonesia’s rich and diverse ethnic cultures. Various public facilities in Nusantara have already been completed with many more being constructed.
