BEAUFORT: The support beam on an unfinished Pan Borneo Highway flyover over Sungai Padas collapsed, prompting public calls for a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into the quality of its construction.
Resident, Omar, said one of the main pillars holding up the bridge suddenly broke and crashed to the ground, noting that this happened before any vehicles had even used it.
“It will certainly cost lives if it is used. The bridge is clearly not strong or durable, even though it was built using reinforced concrete,” he said in a WhatsApp chat group, Sunday.
He said the flyover, which has been under construction for more than five years without completion, was intended to serve as a shortcut connecting the area to Lumadan across Sungai Padas. This route would benefit not only local motorists but also travellers from Brunei and Sarawak.
He questioned how a newly built structure could fail before bearing any traffic load and called on the contractor to be held accountable.
“The structure is already damaged before any vehicle has even driven on it. So, how would it hold up once heavy traffic starts using it? The contractor must take responsibility,” he said.

Additionally, he urged the Public Works Department to scrutinise all construction materials used before any further work proceeds, adding that the incident reflected poorly on Sabah.
“This is very embarrassing for the people of Sabah,” he said.
