Kota Kinabalu: A total of 58 compounds were issued and 12 vehicles were towed away during an enforcement operation targeting illegal parking and traffic obstruction across the city centre on Thursday.

The 8am to 8.30pm operation by the Special Action Division under City Hall (DBKK) covered the northern and southern rural zones as well as the Anjung Kinabalu area.

Nine officers took part in the operation, inspecting vehicles blocking roads before issuing compounds. Vehicles that posed an obstruction to traffic flow were towed away.

Motorists whose vehicles were towed away face a RM350 towing fee on top of a RM100 compound for obstruction or illegal parking.

Those whose vehicles remain at the DBKK pound are charged RM150 for every night of storage. Vehicle owners are also required to settle all outstanding summonses with DBKK before their vehicles are released.

The operation also included patrols at known beggar congregation points, with officers monitoring traffic light areas near Wawasan Plaza, City Point, Le Meridien and Wisma Merdeka.

Traffic control duties were carried out along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen to manage congestion around the Anjung Kinabalu night market, which regularly draws large crowds and vehicles to the area.

The DBKK reminded motorists to observe parking regulations to avoid the financial penalties that come with enforcement action.
