In a statement on Monday, Phoong said the appointment was made following the recommendation of the party and the Federal Government, with the consent of His Majesty the King.
He said his belief and mission remained unchanged throughout his political journey, regardless of the position or role he holds.
Phoong said he had listened to public feedback, criticism, reminders and expectations over the past six months and would continue to raise issues affecting Sabah without fear in Parliament.
He said he remained committed to defending Sabah’s rights and building a Malaysian federation that is fair and just for the State while serving as a strong voice for Sabah in the Senate.
