Marathon runner struck by vehicle 
ACP Kasim said preliminary investigations revealed the incident happened around 3.30am when the victim, a 40-year-old man, was running along the left side of the road, which had been designated for marathon participants.
Kota Kinabalu: A runner participating in the Borneo International Marathon was struck by a vehicle along Jalan UMS in the early hours of Sunday, leaving both the athlete and the driver with minor injuries.

City police confirmed that a report was received regarding the incident.

Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said preliminary investigations revealed the incident happened around 3.30am when the victim, a 40-year-old man, was running along the left side of the road, which had been designated for marathon participants.

“A Proton Saga driven by a 27-year-old local man was travelling along Km 32 of Jalan UMS heading towards Likas when it allegedly collided with the runner from behind.

“After the impact, the vehicle is believed to have continued moving before losing control and crashing near the Petronas station along the Tuaran Bypass.

“The victim sustained minor injuries to his hand, knee and back of the neck. He received further treatment at Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu. The driver also suffered minor injuries to his right arm,” he said.

Authorities noted that safety cones had been placed along the left lane to separate marathon participants from normal traffic during the event.

The vehicle involved has been taken to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters for further inspection by Puspakom.

The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, while investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
